Defra Approved Multifuel Stoves
Defra approved multifuel stoves are a great choice for those who live in smoke-free areas. They are very safe and can burn wood or other approved smokeless fuels.
The Defra Logo is usually on the appliance or in its specification to show that it can be used for Smoke Control Areas. These appliances also come with a high energy rating with low emissions.
Clean Burn Technology
We offer a range of wood burning stoves which are Defra-approved. This means they are able to meet the strictest emission standards when used with wood or other approved fuels. The stoves have been independently tested and built to burn a variety of fuels. A Defra-approved stove will also feature features like secondary and tertiary burning that maximize the use of energy and minimise harmful gases.
The
Durable Stoves that are approved by Defra typically have an 'SE' logo (which is a distinct sign for smoke exempt) or the word SE after their name. This signifies that the stove has been independently tested and is able to be used in a Smoke-Control Area with logs or other approved solid fuels. The testing procedure includes several tests to test on the stove's performance under different conditions, and also to confirm that it generates a minimum of 5 grams of particulates/kg when burning wood.
To meet this standard, Defra-approved stoves feature an upgraded top air vent that prevents the user closing the top vent completely. The air vent at the top that is closed too far will restrict the flow of oxygen to the fire, which causes it to smolder instead of burning. If you did this with a non Defra approved stove you are in violation of the law and could be charged with violations of nuisance smoking.
To avoid the smell of smoke, purchase wood that has been seasoned or kiln dried. The wood has been dried for many years and reduces the moisture content below 20%. A simple wood moisture meter can be used to determine the amount of moisture in your wood.
You can also limit the amount of nuisance smoke that is produced by your Defra approved stove by only using dry well-seasoned, well-seasoned, kiln-dried or spruce logs. Never burn damp, wet, or unseasoned wood. This will cause a lot more smoke and you could be fined by the local authority.
Smoke Control Area Approval
DEFRA approved stoves comply with the strict standards for air quality set by the government. These stoves can run on a variety of fuels that include wood, as well as certain approved smokeless materials in Smoke Control Areas.
Burning untreated wood or other wet fuels, without a DEFRA exempt or approved stove can cause smoke that could be a nuisance to neighbors. This can also cause issues with local air quality, especially if you live in an urban zone. You may be charged with a fine or even arrested when you burn fuels that are not authorized in the Smoke Control Area or use an appliance that is not made to work with smokeless fuels.
Defra approved stoves are built with secondary and tertiary systems of combustion that allow fuel to be burned at lower temperatures which, in turn, produces less particulate matter (PM2.5). This is achieved through the use of stainless steel liners as well as a unique convection mechanism which pushes air down the chimney, even when the fire has gone out. This allows stoves to burn wood more efficiently and produce less carbon dioxide.
A Defra Approved Stove will also include an adjustment for the top air vent that prevents you from closing it down completely. When you cut the air supply, a stove will cease to burn properly, smoulder excessively and then start producing smoke.
DEFRA legislation stoves approved appliances will allow you to shut the vent, but not completely so that the fire will burn at a lower heat and still be in compliance with UK regulations.
When selecting a brand new Defra approved stove it is important to consider the style and design of the stove and whether it will fit in with the decor in your home. There are a variety of styles and sizes available, from traditional fireplaces and inglenooks to more contemporary designs which look great in open-plan living spaces.
Most Defra approved stoves have a 5kW flue outlet so they can be used legally in Smoke Control Areas, which include the majority of UK towns and cities. This can also save money on installation costs since the stove only requires a 5" liner, as opposed to the more costly 6" liner.
Aesthetics
Multi-fuel stoves aren't just meant to be functional. They can also add style and awe to your home. Many models are available in a variety of designs to suit your decor either modern or traditional. They usually have cleaner lines and sleeker finishes than wood-burning stoves. This makes them a more appealing option for any room.

Make sure that the stove is in compliance with local requirements for clearance from combustible materials. You can get an idea of what these are by consulting the manufacturer's guidelines that will specify the distance you need to keep flammable items like curtains or walls away from your stove.
When you are shopping for a multi-fuel stove you may think about the airwash system. This keeps the glass windows clear so that you can enjoy your fire. Some multi-fuel stoves even include a removable grate that makes it easier to change fuel and clean the stove.
